Adolescent Moral Education from the Perspective of Ushul al-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyah wa Asalibuha

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of adolescent moral education in the thought of Abdurrahman An-Nahlawi as presented in Ushul al-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyah wa Asalibuha. Previous studies have discussed moral education from classical Islamic literature and examined An-Nahlawi’s thought from particular perspectives, but the use of his educational methods as a basis for adolescent moral education has not been specifically examined. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach with library research and content analysis. The primary source was An-Nahlawi’s Ushul al-Tarbiyah al-Islamiyah wa Asalibuha, supported by relevant scholarly literature. The findings identify seven educational methods used in An-Nahlawi’s concept of moral education: al-hiwar, al-qashash, al-amtsal, al-qudwah, al-mumarasah wa al-‘amal, al-‘ibrah wa al-mau‘izhah, and at-targhib wa at-tarhib. These methods function to convey, reinforce, and internalize Islamic moral values through dialogue, stories, examples, practice, advice, and encouragement or warning. The analysis also shows that moral education in An-Nahlawi’s thought involves cognitive, affective, behavioral, and spiritual dimensions, indicating that moral formation is not limited to the acquisition of moral knowledge but also includes its internalization and application in daily conduct. The theoretical contribution of this study lies in formulating an integrated conceptual relationship between An-Nahlawi’s educational methods and the process of adolescent moral formation. The study contributes to Islamic education by providing a conceptual basis for understanding adolescent moral education through An-Nahlawi’s educational thought.
