The Implementation of Educational Values in the Hadith on the Pursuit of Knowledge: An Analytical Study of the Hadith “Talabul ‘Ilmi Faridatun ‘Ala Kulli Muslim”

Abstract

The hadith talabul 'Ilmi Faridatun 'Ala Kulli Muslim is an important foundation in Islamic education because it emphasizes seeking knowledge as a religious obligation. Previous studies have examined the meaning and educational significance of the hadith, while other studies have focused on the implementation of Islamic educational values in schools. Hadith studies have also examined its authenticity through analysis of the sanad (chain of transmission) and matn (text). However, these aspects have generally been studied separately, and research integrating hadith authentication with empirical examination of its educational values in Islamic educational institutions remains limited. This study aims to examine how the educational values contained in the hadith are implemented at MA NU Nahdlatul Fata, Jepara, by integrating takhrij analysis with a qualitative case study. Data were collected through observations, interviews, documentation, and hadith analysis. The data were analyzed through takhrij analysis and an interactive qualitative approach involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that, despite scholarly differences regarding the authenticity of the hadith's chain of transmission, its educational message is broadly accepted and reflected in school practices. The values of responsibility, sincerity, discipline, respect for knowledge, and lifelong learning are reflected through classroom instruction, teacher role modelling, religious habituation, and academic culture. These practices encourage students to understand learning as both an academic pursuit and a religious responsibility that shapes their attitudes and character. By linking hadith authentication with empirical evidence, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of how prophetic teachings are translated into educational practice.
