Abstract

The success rate of early childhood education reflects the quality of education. Improving the quality of early childhood learning by focusing on higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) is essential. This study aims to investigate the application of this strategy to improve higher-order thinking skills in early childhood at Raudlatul Athfal (Raudlatul Athfal) in Sidoarjo District. The background of this study is to develop HOTS from an early age as a foundation for lifelong learning and adaptation to future challenges in the 21st century. Initial observations indicate that the dominant learning method still focuses on one-way knowledge transfer, with educators being more dominant, and not facilitating children's creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design, using in-depth interviews with educators, participant observation, documentation related to the curriculum and lesson plans, and document analysis. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The research subjects were educators and early childhood at Raudlatul Athfal in Sidoarjo District. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of project-based learning strategies has a significant impact on the development of children's HOTS. Children can demonstrate improved abilities in formulating questions, planning, collaborating, solving problems, and reflecting on their learning outcomes, applying them through projects relevant to everyday life. Educators play an active role as facilitators, providing guidance, and creating a learning environment that supports exploration and discovery. This study recommends broader implementation of project-based learning in the Raudlatul Athfal curriculum to optimize HOTS development in early childhood.
