Abstract

This study aims to describe the existence of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in their historical and social contexts, analyze their position based on Law Number 18 of 2019 concerning Pesantren, and identify the point of convergence between pesantren traditions and formal state regulations. Using a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach, this study examines relevant literature, regulations, and previous research findings. The results indicate that pesantren maintain a strong existence as Indonesia’s indigenous Islamic educational institutions capable of adapting to changing times. The enactment of Law No. 18 of 2019 provides formal recognition for pesantren as institutions of education, da’wah, and community empowerment while preserving their autonomy and scholarly traditions. The intersection between pesantren and the state lies in the harmonization of traditional values with a modern and inclusive national education system.
