Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) teachers in shaping students’ Islamic character at SMP Muhammadiyah Program Khusus Gantiwarno, Klaten Regency. The formation of Islamic character is a crucial aspect of education, particularly in faith-based schools, as it emphasizes not only cognitive achievement but also attitudes and behaviors aligned with Islamic values. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that IRE teachers play significant roles as educators, role models (uswah hasanah), mentors, motivators, and evaluators in the character-building process. The implementation of character education is carried out through the habituation of worship practices, the cultivation of discipline, honesty, responsibility, and the strengthening of moral values both in classroom learning and in religious school activities. Furthermore, collaboration between teachers, parents, and the school environment supports the success of Islamic character development. Therefore, the role of IRE teachers is highly strategic in shaping students who possess noble character, strong Islamic identity, and the ability to apply Islamic values in their daily lives.
