Abstract

This study aims to explore the symbolic meaning and motivation behind the use of the veil (cadar) as part of the self-identity of Muslim women at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. A qualitative, descriptive approach was employed to understand the subjective experiences of women who wear the veil within social and cultural contexts. The results indicate that the veil serves as a symbol of devotion and obedience to Allah, as well as a tool for self-protection and social control. The primary motivations for wearing the veil stem from divine guidance, the desire to please parents, and the need to preserve personal dignity, which subsequently leads to transformation in attitude and personality, making women more polite and self-controlled. Psychologically and socially, the veil represents a form of reconstructing identity and spiritual expression that strengthens the presence of Muslim women amid societal complexities. These findings affirm that the veil holds profound meaning as part of the process of authentic identity formation.
